Three guys in their 20s from Italy brought their performance to the beautiful and majestic Palace Theatre in Albany like the Beatles stormed the U.S. in the early 60s. In fact, during a performance of 22 songs in less than two hours, Il Volo channeled the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones and Dean Martin.

The nearly sold out crowd were mainly from that era and appreciated the interpretations of the classics by the trio. The audience was clearly Italian, white, above 50 years old entering in wheelchairs, walking canes, oxygen tanks and even a stretcher.

The performers, Sicilian-born Piero Barone, 22, Bologna-born Ignazio Boschetto, 21, and Montepagano-born Gianluca Ginoble, 21, were playful on stage, demonstrated wonderful camaraderie and all had strong voices that could send chills up anyone’s spine.

Adding to the performance were the dramatic lighting and a stellar concert from the 15-piece band as the backdrop.

The group calls their songs popera, a blend of popular music and opera. Boschetto says his influence is Luciano Pavarotti but sang and aria from Placido Domingo’s repertoire.

Other selections during their show included Volare, It’s Now or Never, Memories (Phantom of the Opera), You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, Tonight (West Side Story), My Way, Unchained Melody, Delilah and several songs in Italian that made me feel like people in other countries who don’t speak English listening to American performers.

These three 20-somethings have a long career ahead of them. They are athletic, passionate and know how to woo an audience. Let’s hope they stay on the creative path and churn out original music we all can enjoy for many years.

Il Volo is currently in the midst of a 59-stop European and North American tour through mid-June.
